2024 Tweet concerning Ludwig Boltzmann and statistical mechanics. Perhaps more importantly was his effect upon his students, one being Svante Arrhenius who calculated how global temperature would rise with increasing quantities of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. He arrived at 5 Celsius degrees but felt that this would not happen for thousands of years so nothing to worry about!
2024 Letter to T Cubed about Shackleton's voyage to Antarctica. The link is made to his observations of the quantity of wildlife, whales and seals, then compared to now and global warming. Shackleton's ship the Endurance was discovered by Mensun Bound 5 March 2022 . One interesting discovery was that the ship was not crushed by the ice but that the ice had destroyed the decking near the rudder. Water eventually penetrated and the ship sank. It is a good example of a foreseeable disaster brought about by lack of funding and cutting corners.
