Like Saudi Arabia, India is determined to change its didactic approach to education to one of investigation and enquiry. There is a huge demand for learning and most Indians see a good education as the route to success. My role has been to work with CORE Education Technologies in Mumbai to support the production of content for TI-Nspire.
The history of mathematics is embedded in India with the origin of zero and the Hindu-Arabic system of numerals from which our Western Arabic system is derived. I saw street peddlers selling computer discs (their only ware) to help youngsters learn tables up to 100!
People interested in education should watch progress in India carefully. They are the world's biggest users of social media and have a very liberal approach towards the use of digital technology. The thirst for learning means that they will be able to harness the power of digital teaching tools very effectively in the classroom and are perhaps making more rapid progress than we in the west.
