A recent article in Physics World credits Nicholas Copernicus with making the first reference to a possible transit of Venus in 1543: De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium.
Nearly 100 years later Jeremiah Horrocks made the first observation of such a transit.
After this year's transit, June 5/6 2012 it will be 105 years before the next Venus Transit.
